On December 15, 1836 the entire record of the nation's efforts to spur innovation via patent protection, records of some of the earliest and most important inventions of the young nation, were lost.
During the civil war, the manufacture of powder and explosives was often handled by the most vulnerable, young women and children, whose labor was needed when so many men had been sent off to war.
